Title: | Assumption - Christ, Mary, Saints, and Angels in Glory |
---|
Notes: | Antonio Allegri da Correggio was an Italian Renaissance painter who is well-known for his affinity for strong contrasts between light and dark. Though his talents appear to have emerged apart from work with other artists, his influence was felt by many subsequent artists. Correggio’s Assumption is a fresco adorning the dome of the Cathedral of Parma, Italy. The dome base is populated by the four protector saints of Parma: St. Bernard, gazing upwards, St. Hilary wearing a yellow covering, St. Thomas with an angel, and St. John the Baptist with a lamb. Mary wears red and blue robes and is lifted by angels as to meet Jesus in the center. All around, the disciples gaze stunned at the scene set before them. With beautiful colors and stunning illusions, this dramatic painting sets the viewer amidst the angels occupying the heavens. |
