Title:Difficult Journey - Transition to Bethlehem
Notes:Fritz von Uhde was a German painter who first focused on battle pieces and landscapes, but later moved to religious subjects and genre art. His religious pieces often portrayed biblical scenes occurring in his own modern day, which many lauded as evangelical in nature. We see this displayed in his piece, Difficult Journey—Transition to Bethlehem, as a modern Mary and Joseph make their way to the city. This difficult journey is relayed to the viewer in the foggy and desolate path the couple are walking. Mary leans heavily on Joseph as they make their way forward down a muddy road carrying minimal provisions for their trip. Feelings of isolation and loneliness are brought forth, which indeed must have been how the couple felt as they embarked on this lifepath of raising a child as special as Jesus.
