Title: | Pilate Washes His Hands |
---|
Notes: | Peter Koenig is a Catholic artist whose goal in life is “to paint the drama, romance and poetry of the sacred book” (https://www.pwkoenig.co.uk/). In this painting, Jesus is held by two guards as Pilate makes his decision in consultation with the people and religious leaders. His face is one of a man silently resigned to his fate. The crowd of people are clearly upset, their angry expressions accompanied by waving their hands and pointing fingers at Jesus. Pilate continues to watch the crowd as he dips his hands into a bowl of water held by a young boy while his wife stands at his side, providing support and issuing warning. The viewer might question whether washing oneself of innocent blood can be so easily done. Is it truly that easy to forgive oneself for such an act? Is this how politicians in our own day treat the casualties of their decision-making and policy-writing? |
