Title: | Sarcophagus with Crossing of the Red Sea |
---|
Notes: | Used as an altar in the Cathedral of St. Trophine, Arles Front frieze: the Egyptians chasing the Israelites, caught in the Red Sea. Includes personifications of the Sea, Miriam with a tambourine. "The portrait of Miriam, tambourine in hand, singing and dancing with the women in the community, has brought brush to canvas and captivated the imagination of generations. As part of the exodus narrative, the celebration of Miriam and the women holds a place in one of the formative events for describing and understanding others in the old and New Testaments."
