Title:Jesus appears at Emmaus
Notes:JESUS MAFA is a response to the New Testament readings from the Lectionary by a Christian community in Cameroon, Africa. Each of the readings was selected and adapted to dramatic interpretation by the community members. Photographs of their interpretations were made, and these were then transcribed to paintings.

After the walk on the road to Emmaus, Jesus is invited to stay for dinner. Here we see him offering bread to his hosts as they talk. The dramatic presentation here makes the viewer feel as though they are in the hustle and bustle of the household. The two travelers listen intently to Jesus as he is preparing to serve them. We know from the passage that they recognize Jesus when he serves them and he immediately disappears. They respond to this event saying, “Were not our hearts burning while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scripture to us?” Perhaps we are all on our own journey to Emmaus, wondering at the meaning of events in our lives. May we retrieve our ability to see the divine in the strangers that join us on our journey so that our hearts may burn with greater compassion, mercy, love, peace, and justice.
