Title: | Visitation of Mary |
---|
Notes: | Jacopo da Pontormo, or Jacopo Carucci, was an Italian painter famous for the way in which his figures seemed to float in their scenes as well as subjects’ twining poses. We see both of these elements in Pontormo’s Visitation of Mary. This piece shows the pregnant Mary’s visitation to Elizabeth, pregnant with John the Baptist, as they embrace one another. Their faces do not express the fullness of joy typical in visitation pieces, but rather a severity and weight due to the recognition of the significance of impending events. Their heads are ringed slightly by partial gold halos. Two women, difficult to identify, stand behind them looking at the viewer as though imploring us to also bear witness to this miracle. |
