Title: | A Buckwheat Field on Thomas Cole's Farm |
---|
Notes: | "To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life"..."Praise the LORD from the earth...mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars!" The authors of Revelation and Psalm 148 speak of the natural wonders of God's creation, as they describe God's nature and the earth's response to God. For the author of Revelation, water becomes alive, the source of true life; for the author of the Psalm, the hills and trees are alive with praise for the LORD. This beaucolic landscape echoes these words of scripture. The artist Farrer is a generation older than the owner of the farm he paints; Thomas Cole, one of America's great artists from the early part of the 19th century, painted landscapes with darker hues and more difficult subject matter. Farrer, ironically, provides us with a glimpse of a different American perspective on the land, one that is softened by the social and economic maturity of the country during the several decades between Cole's early landscapes and this work by Farrer. |
