Title:Mosaic of the Good Shepherd
Notes:"As the viewer's eyes wander over the mosaic surface, they are drawn to the glittering gold of Christ's robes and the imperial purple of his mantle. This is no ordinary shepherd but Christ, the supreme ruler. The symmetry of the composition focuses attention on the golden cross. Christ's twisting movement and right arm also lead the eyes not only to the lamb but also to the tall, stemmed cross. The imperial staff joined to the Christian cross replaces the Constantinian Chi Rho monogram as the imperial standard and the symbol of the combined earthly and heavenly empires. The golden cross proclaims Christ's victory over death. That victory brings the hope of salvation for all faithful believers. "(Stokstad, 13-14)
