Title: | Stream in the Forest |
---|
Notes: | "The laments and praises of Psalms 42-43 work because of their haunting imagery and sustained structures -- the deer panting for flowing streams, tears as constant food, and the repeated "Why are you cast down, O my soul?" typical of a complaint psalm, the grievance-juxtaposed-with-confidence pattern dominates...Augustine's "Our souls are restless till they find their rest in you" might well trace its origin to the far more vivid psalmist's simile, "As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God" (42:1). This sylvan image, reminiscent of the Song of Solomon, invites the reader/worshiper into an extended lyric that wanders through both psalms, alternating between extremes of questions, lament and complaint and confident hope and vindication."
