First Sunday in Advent, Year A: This image indicates Isaiah prophesying the coming glory of Christ. Isaiah is seated next to a representation of a city. The city may be Bethlehem, the city of Christ's birth, or it may represent Jerusalem, where the House of the Lord is established. The following verse from the Isaiah reading for this Sunday's lectionary is full of rich verbal imagery, and the artist of the Amiens Cathedral sculpture attempts to give it visual life: "Many peoples shall come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths." For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem." (Isaiah 2:3)
