Notes: | The words of the prophet Isaiah to his people: "Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house...?" -- Isaiah 58:6-7a Brevard Childs in his commentary on Isaiah frames God's special call through his servant Isaiah this way: "Phrases such as "loosen the cords of evil," "untie the straps of the yoke," "letting the oppressed go free," occur frequently in the earlier prophets (Amos 5:14; Isaiah 1:16-17; 33:15, Micah 6:6)...However, this response is more generated by the reader from the book of Isaiah as a whole than from an intentional authorial reference. To share bread with the hungry, to provide shelter for the homeless, and to clothe the naked goes far beyond the servant's commission and addresses common human compassion in a general imperative."
