Title:The Return of the Prodigal Son
Notes:Rembrandt Harmenszoon va Rijn was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. Though he was considered a creative master in these three media, he is known as the greatest etcher, a title established during his lifetime that prevails until today. His works covered a variety of different subjects: portraits, genre scenes, historical scenes, landscapes, self-portraits, mythological and allegorical scenes, animals, and biblical scenes. The Return of the Prodigal Son is one of Rembrandt’s final pieces before his death. This painting displays the prodigal son kneeling before his father as he has returned home pleading for forgiveness. His clothing reveals his poverty and the state in which he has been living since he squandered his inheritance. The father affectionately embraces him to welcome him home. Though we do not know exactly who the other two figures are, the one standing at the right is the brother disapprovingly eyeing his father’s benevolence. We are reminded in this parable of the radical love Jesus taught us model in our own lives.
