Notes: | Rembrandt Harmenszoon va Rijn was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. Though he was considered a creative master in these three media, he is known as the greatest etcher, a title established during his lifetime that prevails until today. His works covered a variety of different subjects: portraits, genre scenes, historical scenes, landscapes, self-portraits, mythological and allegorical scenes, animals, and biblical scenes. The Three Crosses is an etching portraying the crucifixion of Jesus. Jesus inhabits the center of the piece, flanked by the two thieves crucified with him. Roman soldiers surround the execution alongside mourning citizens. Jesus’ mother, Mary, is being held by John, the evangelist, as she weeps. Light emanates from the heavens onto the figure of Jesus, signaling divine approval for his sacrifice. This light does not encompass the two thieves equally, however, suggesting the one illumined thief will be with Jesus in paradise as he said (Luke 23:43). |
