Title: | Elizabeth of Hungary Visiting a Hospital |
---|
Notes: | Adam Elsheimer was a German painter whose works were small-scale, but exhibited a variety of light effects. In this work, we see St. Elizabeth of Hungary, a princess who used her recovered dowry to open a hospital and care for the sick. Around her head is a halo as she offers food and drink to a man sitting up in bed. Two women, in the middle of the painting, assist her, while other patients, visitors, and hospital workers populate the rest of the painting. Small details populate the piece: a statue of the virgin and Christ child is mounted on the wall; small paintings with religious subjects hang above the patients’ beds; a chamber pot under the bed; a glass jug of water on the bedside table. Viewing this piece evokes the reminder that all Christians are to care for the sick, “for as you have done it unto the least of these my family, you have done it unto me.” |
