Title: | Altar of St. John |
---|
Notes: | Rogier van der Weyden was a Netherlandish painter famous for his diptych portraits, religious triptychs, and altarpieces. In this altarpiece of St. John, the central panel displays the baptism of Jesus. At the top of the painting, God appears in red hues in the sky looking down upon the scene unfolding. A dove descends on Jesus as he stands fully frontal in the center of the piece in a stream of water. John stands to Jesus’ right, blessing him with his hand raised above Jesus’ head. An angel kneels to Jesus’ left, holding Christ’s garment. A curved inscription in Latin descends from God which reads, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” |
